Beer Caps to Up2Stream Hi-Fi: Wood4Sound 2.1 Mini

Beer Caps to Up2Stream Hi-Fi: Wood4Sound 2.1 Mini

Intro

What happens when a passion for collecting meets a love for high-fidelity audio? You get the Wood4Sound 2.1 Mini Collector Edition. This isn't just a speaker; it’s a time capsule "imprisoning" 378 unique stories under a crystal-clear resin surface. It’s likely the only speaker of its kind in the world where beer culture and premium sound engineering collide.

About the Creator

I am Sigitas Bagdonavičius, the founder of Wood4Sound based in Lithuania. What started as a hobby—making a TV stand and a few speakers for friends—quickly turned into a deep passion for acoustic craftsmanship. I am a self-taught creator who believes that speakers should be more than just plastic boxes; they should be warm, aesthetic, and soulful pieces of art. For me, every build is about "good energy" and the pursuit of the perfect sound-to-design balance.

Project Overview

The "Mini Collector Edition" was born from a personal collection of beer bottle caps. I had hundreds of them left over after making a custom tabletop and couldn't bear the thought of hiding them in an album where no one would see them. I decided to immortalize them in an acoustic masterpiece.

This 2.1-channel audio system incorporates 378 original bottle caps sourced from around the globe—a remarkably diverse collection featuring everything from local Lithuanian craft brews like Dundulis and Gubernija to world-renowned brands such as Guinness, Chimay, Sapporo, and Blue Moon. Each cap holds a memory, now repurposed as a key component of the enclosures housing this high-performance speaker system.

Components Used

For authentic Hi-Fi audio, I've handpicked some top-tier components.
  • Amplifier:Up2Stream Plate Amplifier 2.1 Board (Total Power: 200W — 2x50W + 100W).
  • Enclosure Materials: 12mm MDF (spray-painted black to enhance visual depth), 13mm-thick premium clear epoxy resin, and a moisture-resistant birch plywood finish.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, AirPlay, Optical Input, and LAN Port.

Construction Process

Planning: The greatest challenge lay in the layout design. The dimensions had to be calculated with complete precision, including the exact placement of each bottle cap. This was necessary to ensure that all 378 caps would perfectly cover the front panel, without interfering with the mounting positions of the speaker drivers.
I deliberately selected black MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) for the base panel; my aim was to make the vibrant colors of the bottle caps stand out more vividly and to create a sense of profound depth once the resin was poured.

Assembly:

The internal structure is where the "science" happens. To ensure no interference, I built acoustically isolated chambers. The stereo drivers and the subwoofer each have their own sealed internal cavities. The subwoofer section was further reinforced with internal bracing to eliminate parasitic vibrations. This is a 100% manual build — I do not use CNC machines. Every cut and detail is achieved using handheld power and cordless tools, ensuring a true human touch in every millimeter.

Setup:

The build involved precision manual cutting, routing for the driver holes, and a multi-stage hand-sanding and polishing process for the resin to achieve a glass-like finish. The final result is a "solid sandwich" of MDF and resin, making the cabinet incredibly heavy and acoustically dead—perfect for sound reproduction.

Final Setup

The speaker weighs 11.6 kg and is designed for maximum stability and power (mains powered). It’s a 200W powerhouse that looks like a piece of modern art. Controlled via the 4STREAM app, it integrates seamlessly with Spotify and Tidal, making it the focal point of any room.

Listening Experience

For its size, the sound is simply fantastic. The Dayton Audio drivers provide a transparent soundstage, while the Tang Band sub ensures the bass is felt even at low volumes. It’s a truly universal speaker—whether it's jazz, rock, or electronic music, the sound remains detailed and "crystal clean." There is a certain satisfaction in hearing a powerful beat coming from a cabinet filled with 378 bottle caps!

Creator Thoughts

This project proves that DIY audio has no limits. Why hide a collection in a drawer when it can become the face of your sound system? The Wood4Sound 2.1 Mini Collector Edition is a reminder that we can surround ourselves with things that have personal meaning without compromising on technology or quality.
